VEREENIGING. – Twenty-eight regional winners in the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition were announced for the second group of regional rounds held at selected locations countrywide on Saturday August 21. Two rounds were held in the Vereeniging area:

– Renier Lues of Rensburg in Heidelburg walked away as the winner of the regional round held at Shoprite Three Rivers. Jean de Villiers of Meyerton came in second, while Jan Jacobs of Homer earned third place.
– Johannes Lesiba Matlou of Sebokeng walked away as the winner of the regional round held at Checkers Hyper Arcon Park. Gerrie Gouws of Vanderbijlpark came in second, while Annatjie Beer of Boltonwold earned third place.
Renier and Johannes each won R1 200 Shoprite or Checkers meat vouchers and gift hampers from Coca Cola, All Gold and Simba, and will both compete in the provincial round which to be held on Saturday, September 18.
In the regional round competitors from surrounding areas had to bring and braai one-kilogram of their own secret recipe boerewors, which was judged first raw and then cooked. The independent panel of judges – representatives from the SA Chefs Association – had a very difficult time choosing the winning Boerewors, which demonstrates the high quality of products entered for this yearΓÇÖs competition.
The competition ends on Saturday (October 2) when ten provincial winners get together at Sun City for the grand cook-off to establish who will wear the 2010 Boerewors Crown.
The 2010 winning recipe will be on the shelves of all Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores by October 14.
Shoprite Checkers is renowned for the excellent quality of the meat available at their Meat Markets and they are continuously looking for new recipes and ideas in order to offer customers the best. The group presents the Championship Boerewors challenge annually to assist them in achieving that goal.
