WORLD CLASS LABORATORY NOW OPEN AT SASOL

SASOLBURG – The Sasol Infrachem Laboratory at the Sasol One Site in Sasolburg, a facility that conducts process analyses for the chemical industry, was officially opened recently.
As part of the R14 billion Sasolburg Expansion Project that started in 2010, the construction of the R342 million laboratory was approved and began due to an increased demand for laboratory analyses thus a significant increase in instrumentation.
According to Managing Director of Sasol Infrachem, Louis Fourie, maintenance costs increased significantly, utilities began deteriorating and the overall safety of the building became a huge concern for Sasol. The new building is a significant investment for the Sasol One Site Sasolburg and demonstrates the company’s commitment to the South African asset base. “It is in line with Sasol’s strategy to leverage our advanced proprietary technology and is also aligned with our longer term plans to significantly grow the chemicals businesses of the Sasol Group,” he says.
The new 24/7 laboratory provides space for all Sasol Infrachem laboratories under one roof with a total floor area of an estimated 13 000m2 over six levels. The building makes provision for a 10 percent growth and creates synergy opportunities for other Sasolburg laboratories such as Sasol Wax, Sasol Solvents and Sasol Polymers.
The design of the Sasol Infrachem laboratory is based on international and modern best practices with adequate space for current and future growth and expansions.  Among other expansion plans for Sasolburg is the R8.4 billion Sasol Wax Expansion Project. The first phase of the project will come into operation towards the end of 2012. When complete in 2014, it will double the production of hard wax in South Africa.

Boude swaai en n tiekiedraai

VANDERBIJLPARK.

Championship boerewors battle again

VEREENIGING. – It’s that time of year again. Time to dust off that secret recipe, to get out your shiny mincer, to start blending together the perfect balance of herbs and spices, and definitely the right time to prepare yourself for the battle that will see South African boerewors experts sweating over braai-fires across the country.

Yes, it’s time to get ready for the 2012 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition.
Adding to the fireworks of this already sizzling skirmish, is the return of the well-known boerewors baldies – entertainer and food connoisseur, Nataniël, and kwaito artist and musician of note, Mandoza.

Experts
To all the so-called boerewors experts they say: “Game on! We challenge all the would-be champs to really bring it this year. You can’t win a brand new Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider for just stuffing mince and coriander into a casing. Only the best quality traditional boerewors, and the tastiest of course, will do.”

To increase one’s chances of walking away with this grand first prize – not to mention the sought-after Boerewors Crown – ‘boerie’ experts must enter their recipes before the closing date on June 15.

Entry forms are available at any Shoprite, Checkers or Checkers Hyper Meat Market – or enter online at www.championshipboerewors.co.za.

Anyone with an exceptional traditional boerewors recipe, and the skills to make their boerewors from scratch, can enter.

Make sure, though, that your recipe isn’t just any beef sausage – it has to be a traditional boerewors. The South African Chefs Association (SACA), a recognised authority on food in South Africa, will take charge of the judging processe, and they will be making sure that all entries adhere to strict guidelines for making the real thing.

To be traditional, boerewors must contain at least 90-percent meat, always containing beef, as well as lamb or pork, or a mixture of lamb and pork. Fat content of the meat mixture may not exceed 30-percent. Furthermore, the distinctive combination of spices like coriander, cloves, nutmeg and black pepper as well as fluids like vinegar, water and Worcestershire Sauce are what differentiates boerewors from other variants.

So, if you want to qualify for the Shoprite and Checkers’ competition, please ensure that your recipe is valid.

Participants have a long road ahead of them to get to the 2012 Championship Boerewors Grand Finale.

First participants will face-off in regional rounds that take place countrywide on Saturdays August 11, 18 and 25, and only those who stand victorious after these hard-hitting clashes will go on to compete against their provincial counterparts on Saturday September 15.

From the provincial rounds, 10 boerewors-warriors will emerge triumphant, only to then face their toughest adversaries in the final battle for title of Boerewors Champion. This is the Grand Finale at Sun City on October 6.

Shoprite and Checkers are proud of South Africa’s boerewors tradition and celebrate it every year by sponsoring the Championship Boerewors Competition.

The supermarket chain’s meat markets are famous for the outstanding quality of their meat and the group is continually on the lookout for new recipes and ideas so consumers can enjoy only the best quality and variety. The annual Championship Boerewors Competition plays a key role in helping the Group to achieve this aim.

Jy haal dus vlak asem.

Gooi bietjie Arnica-olie by jou badwater.

Sluit aan by jou naaste gimnasium, of probeer draf of stap.

Kry ‘n stokperdjie. Aktiwiteite wat handwerk verg, is die beste. Tuinmaak, naaldwerk, bak, houtwerk of skilder is goeie voorbeelde hiervan.

ADT celebrates earth week

ZAMDELA. – ADT Security recently celebrated its fourth annual Earth Week. The theme for 2012 was ‘The future’s in our hands’.

This year’s event was a huge success with the different regions and branches taking part in community projects in an attempt to share their commitment to saving the planet.
Several national initiatives were implemented at all offices which included renewed recycling drives and pledges to cut back on printing and water wastage.

As its green initiative for Earth Day, ADT Vaal Triangle came together at the recently-completed Zamdela Police Station to plant a tree to replace the previous one, which had died. Station Commander Colonel KF Veloi attended the tree-planting ceremony and commented on how the gesture would do a great deal to further good relations between ADT and the SAPS.

“I didn’t realise planting a tree was such hard work but it was very satisfying being able to give back to the environment and our local SAPS, who do so much for the community,” says André de Wet, ADT branch manager of the Vaal Triangle.

“We really enjoyed our day together and are pleased to have made a difference in some small way.”

Hart lyer maak hart oop vir oues

VANDERBIJLPARK.

Strictly come bowling in Henley

MEYERTON. – On April 27 the Henley-on-Klip Bowling Club hosted “Strictly Come Bowling”, a novel competition that gave 36 non-bowlers and dozens of new spectators the opportunity to experience the fun and challenge of competitive bowls for the first time.

The event was part of the club’s programme for National Bowls Awareness Day, an initiative by Bowls South Africa (BSA) to promote greater interest in the sport of bowls. The annual day is also BSA’s primary fundraising event for CANSA and Disability Bowls.

A public draw from a large pool of interested applicants determined the 12 “Strictly Come Bowling” teams. Each team included three non-bowlers and one experienced bowler. The ages of the non-bowlers ranged from seven to over 70, and most had never set foot on a bowling green before.

The 12 Skips had just over a week to get their ‘greenhorn’ teams into shape before the big day!
“Strictly Come Bowling” took place over three rounds of an hour’s play each. The scorers eliminated the four lowest-scoring teams after each round, leaving four teams to contest the title in the final round.

The engaging MC Paul O’Donnell kept the crowd entertained with his amusing bowls commentary and arbitrary “fines” for a number of real and imagined infringements. All proceeds went to the nominated charities.

The winning team was Betty’s Ball Busters which came from three down going into the last head to win by one shot. In the spirit of the day, the winning players and runners-up donated their prize money to charity. There were also prizes for the Best Dressed Team and the Most Enthusiastic New Bowler.

The day started with the excitement and chaos of the “Spider”. This is a traditional event in aid of the National Blind Bowlers Association. As many bowlers as possible, spaced evenly around the perimeter of the green, simultaneously deliver a single wood towards a ‘jack’ in the centre. The closest to the little white ball wins a prize but, more importantly, each participant makes a cash donation to charity.

By all measures, the day was a resounding success. The Club raised over R10 000 for CANSA and Disability Bowls and provided good fun, good food and great entertainment for the large crowd of supporters.
