HOW CAN YOU SPOT A SKIMMING DEVICE?

It recently came to light that criminals are becoming more cunning in their plans to gull unsuspecting ATM-users out of their funds. A new device has been discovered (see accompanying images and descriptions) which have been found in shopping centres, petrol stations and convenience stores all over JHB.

Please be aware of these and do not consider this to be something you will not be a victim of. Chances are, they may already have your details without you even knowing.

These devices you see here are used to scan magstrip details directly from your ATM card. Simultaneously, while your magstrip is being read, a camera located in the side of the “Skimmer” is viewing every key you push on the keypad. This means that not only do criminals have your card information, they also have your PIN number, making it simple to transfer your details to any card with a magstrip (Edgars card, expired bank cards, Clicks card, etc) and draw funds from an ATM without your knowledge. Please make your friends and family aware of these devices. With an increase of awareness you may not become a victim.

Disguised to seamlessly look like part of an ATM, “skimmers” are devices installed by thieves to surreptitiously swipe your credit and debit-card information. How can you tell whether an ATM may have a skimmer installed? And what can you do at an ATM to protect your information? If you look at one of these skimmers, they look like part of the machine. Before swiping your debit, cheque or credit card, wiggle the protruding slot in which you slide your card, thieves often install skimmers on top of the ATM’s actual slot and secure the skimmer with adhesive. Check the device and wiggle it to see if it’s loose or if it falls off. Look for remnants or residue of double-sided tape. Anything that looks unusual, check it out. When you type in your PIN on the machine, cover it up so no one can see it, because some have cameras that arees reading or viewing your PIN as you enter it. Finally, if you’re not sure, just don’t use the machine!

A card skimming device can also be attached to an ATM machine. However, despite their detailed design, the devices rely on double-sided adhesive and can come loose. ATM users are advised to check any machine before they use it. If the keypad is raised above the surface of the desk at the ATM, it may be that thieves have installed a keypad over the existing one. Users are also advised to use only newer ATMs with a green plastic tab protruding from machine next to the slot. The tab makes it much more difficult for a skimmer to be installed. – (Security Web Team)

PRETTIGE ‘WASDAG’ SE DIEPER WAARDE

Nêrens ter wêreld is so ‘n grootse poging nog ooit aangepak nie.

ARCELORMITTAL CELEBRATES 100 YEARS

VEREENIGING. – ArcelorMittal South Africa, Africa’s largest steel producer is pleased to announce that its Vereeniging Plant has reached a significant milestone as it celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

Steelmaking operations at the Vereeniging plant commenced a century ago with a 10-tonne furnace, producing roughly 4 000 tonnes of pig-iron steel between 1913 and 1920. The Vereeniging Works is the country’s major supplier of speciality-steel products, seamless tube and forge products. Almost 500 000 tonnes of final product is produced per year, of which some 32% of steel is distributed to offshore markets.

The Vereeniging Plant plays a striking role in ArcelorMittal South Africa’s overall growth strategy and in the steel manufacturer’s ability to continue contributing immensely to local economic growth and job creation in South Africa. The company is extremely proud to have reached this milestone considering the many challenges and obstacles that South Africa and ArcelorMittal South Africa have faced over the last century. Some of these challenges include two world wars, the Great Depression in the 1930s, countless economic difficulties and several recessions. “However, the fact that we are all here today commemorating our 100th year anniversary bears testamimony to the fact that we are a strong and resilient company,” commented Ms Nyembezi-Heita, chief executive olfficer (CEO): ArcelorMittal South Africa. In 2010, the company spent R220-million on a dust-extraction unit, which has contributed to a significant reduction of emissions in the region. “Dust above the Vereeniging site has been significantly eliminated, with the dust-capture rate from melt shop activities improving by 45%. This is just one way of dealing with the various environmental challenges we face on a daily basis,” adds Ms Nyembezi-Heita.

“In the long term, we will continue with our robust growth and retention strategy to develop positively as a company and we look forward to celebrating another 100 years of success for the Vereeniging Plant,” concludes Ms Nyembezi-Heita. ArcelorMittal, South Africa’s Vereeniging plant, marked its 100-year milestone with a celebration at its Vereeniging plant on September 3, where government, stakeholders and company employees attended to acknowledge this momentous occasion.

* ArcelorMittal South Africa was founded in 1928. It is a subsidiary of the world’s leading steel and mining company and Africa’s largest steel manufacturer. The company operates in 60 countries and employs approximately 260 000 people worldwide.

ArcelorMittal South Africa has a capacity of 7.8 million tonnes of liquid steel per annum with steel manufacturing and chemical plants in Newcastle, Pretoria, Saldanha, Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging. The company employs approximately 10 000 staff members and contractors across

South Africa. The company produces carbon steel in both flat and long products which is supplied to all major steel-consuming industries and is used extensively in critical infrastructure projects.

BEKER-BREKERS!

VEREENIGING.

KLEIN MEISIE MAAK GROOT VERSKIL

VEREENIGING.

JOOST STEEL KOLLIG BY DINEE

’n Terminale motorneuronsiekte is in 2011 by dié voormalige Springbokkaptein -en skrumskakel gediagnoseer.

FIFTEEN TROLLEYS FOR CLEANER VAAL

VANDERBIJLPARK. – The Trolley Project is an incentive of Riverside Rotary Club and has been ongoing for the past eight years.

Johan van Pletzen, President of Riverside Rotary Club, said the aim of the project is to make use of registered collectors of recyclable waste materials to create an income and situation of self sustainability for these individuals – also to create an awareness in the Vaal Triangle that recycling waste materials is a community responsibility.

Van Pletzen urges people to separate dry and wet waste by using different-coloured refuse bags if possible, or at least separate in black bags. People must get involved in this project, either by sponsoring or simply supporting proper personal waste management.

The trolleys are numbered to enable the public to give feedback on the conduct of the individual operators. Van Pletzen said they appreciate that there is a large number of free lancing operators who will not have numbered identifiable yellow trolleys, but this does not make them illegal or less of a collector.

Riverside Rotary Club aims, with the help of the public, the business sector and other major role players in the community, to place proper trolleys and structures in place to create an organised system.

Van Pletzen said that they believe that this project will go from strength to strength with 90.6 FM and Mooivaal Media’s help and influence as their media partners.

CARELS IN UNIEKE VOEDSELPRODUKSIESKEMA

VANDERBIJLPARK.

In his Mayoral Speech, Cllr Baloyi said that being elected Mayor is a huge honour and an incredibly humbling experience.
