ULTRA-UITHOU EN AANHOU

VAALPARK.

OPRAH’S GIRLS MAKE HISTORY IN STYLE

HENLEY-ON-KLIP. – The first group of matriculants from the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls made history by recording a 100% pass rate while the 72 learners produced 188 distinctions between them.

The graduation of the class of 2011 marks the end of an important chapter for the group who started at the Academy in 2007. Five of the learners obtained an average of over 85%, 14 scored over 80% average while 21 obtained over 75%. This means 40 of the 72 candidates, well over half, obtained 75% and above. Most remarkably, all but one of the students achieved an average of over 60%.

Leading the pack with seven distinctions is Gabisile Kgwedi, a keen violin, piano and tennis player who will be studying Medicine at the University Of Cape Town with a view to becoming a heart surgeon. Anne van Zyl, head of the Academy for the past two years, describes the milestone as “the most satisfying of her life”. She said she felty honoured to be part of a team that helps realise Oprah Winfrey’s dream of producing woman leaders in South Africa. Van Zyl attributes the success to the time that the learners and teachers have put in.

The full boarding facilities ensure that staff are available after hours so that, every Saturday, the student had extra classes. Van Zyl notes that the most gratifying aspect of working at the school is the students who, because of their disadvantaged economic background, are deeply committed to improving their circumstances and giving back to their communities through “servant leadership”.

Six of the students will pursue tertiary studies in the United States, with confirmed acceptances, while the rest will be spread across South African universities. The girls are funded through private-sector bursaries and scholarships from their respective institutions.

The Oprah Winfrey Foundation, having funded their entire high school education, plays no role, except subsistence funding, beyond their high school studies. Van Zyl notes that the bar has been set for the next generation, the class of 2012, who she is confident will do just as well as their predecessors. The latter were admitted as the founding group of Grade 7 in 2007, alongside this year’s achievers.

NATIONAL BUSINESS SUPPORT PROG. MAKING AN IMPACT

‘The Legends Programme changed my business’

“Being part of the Legends Programme has totally transformed the way we run our business,” says Julie Hadley, co-founder of the organisation Heartfelt.

Julie is one of 65 business owners and community project leaders supported in 2011 by the Legends Programme, an award-winning national business development initiative funded by the Old Mutual Foundation. Heartfelt trains local women to design and sew hand-crafted brooches, Christmas decorations and other items from felt, which are sold and exported across the world.

“What makes Legends different,” says Julie, “is that it works with small business owners and entrepreneurs such as myself as well as with non-profit organisations and community projects all across the country, with the goal of helping participants attain new levels of success and sustainability.”

Sisters Faatimah and Zainab Paruk, co-founders of the fast-growing Durban-based catering company Chilli Chocolate Chefs, also seems to have found significant value in the business development programme.
“Without doubt, being a part of Legends has helped us transform Chilli Chocolate Chefs into a more organised, professional, confident and passionate business,” says Zainab.

According to programme participants, what sets Legends apart is the strong entrepreneurial focus that is backed up by practical business tools, training and mentoring.
Catherine Wijnberg, the programme originator and Director of Legends implementing-agency Fetola, explains: “We focus on interventions that make an immediate impact, and ensure that Legends delivers the tools and supports business-owners who really need to thrive.”

NO GUINNESS RECORD, BUT LOTS OF FUN

DENEYSVILLE. – Over 4 000 people entered the gates at the 54th “Round the Island” race that was hosted by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) at Lake Deneys Yacht Club (LDYC) from February 3 to 5.

Although the wind was not what a sailing skipper expected 375 entrants were recorded on Sunday which did not better the world record attempt of 2007. The record is still standing and is held by South Africa, recorded at LDYC with 389 entrants over the finish line. Tents, caravans and vendors spread out all over the grounds again this year as sailing enthusiasts flocked to this picturesque town on the shores of the Vaal Dam. There was approximately 1 125 people on the water on the Sunday. Some just lazed in the sun, others ate, drank and just had fun.

On shore there was a beer tent and lots of foodstuff to choose from. Capital radio was on site with live reports that kept visitors up to date about what were happening out on the water. For the kids there was a massive slide and pool to cool off in. For those more adventurous, helicopter flips by Flymargate.com with pilots Mark Stewardson and Hayley Cumming behind the sticks took visitors around the island with a bird’s eye view of all the yachts.

Sponsor SAMSA’s Head of Marketing and Communications, Tebogo Modibo, believes in leading by example and, after completing a sailing course late last year, crewed on one of the boats.
“The experience of being amongst the fleet on the start line was absolutely amazing. As far as the sponsorship is concerned this event is an unrivalled opportunity to take our messages to the sailing community which received them well.

“We anticipate a partnership in this event for years to come. This is an event on the Vaal Triangle’s calendar not to be missed. You do not have to sail to be part of this yearly event,” he said.
The official results were: SAMSA RTIR 2012 Results: Overall: Phil Bennett (L26 Windways), Trevor Hulleman (J22, Hay J), Neil Armstrong (J22, Hang Ten).

ROSHNEE ISLAMIC SCHOOL’S NEW RCL INAUGURATION

ROSHNEE. – The South African national flag is well respected by the learners and the educators of the Roshnee Islamic School, says Abdullah Sujee, the principal.

When two learners designed the school flag in green, gold and black colours with a crescent representing the competence of faith in 2004, we decided that it should be hoisted together with that of the country.
The national flag is always on the left with the school flag on the right.

Sujee says the school flag is designed to illustrate how Africa gave refuge to Islam in its most early years and it reflects the school’s motto: Ignorance is darkness, knowledge is light and Religion is advice.

Addressing the classes of the 2012 academic year during the inauguration of the Representative of the Council of Learners (RCL) on February 8, Sujee says the national flag is hoisted in the school to show loyalty to our country in light of the fact that the government has given minority groups freedom of religion, amongst other things.
As with all schools pupils are encouraged to hoist the flag and learn the national anthem.

“We appreciate the special liberty the government has given to the Muslim community at large to establish its schools and to make education its responsibility as well.
“This in turn lends support to the government’s ideal of making education a societal priority,” adds Sujee.
Some learners received certificates of acknowledgment for their contributions during the school activities including sports.

The chairperson of school governance, A Nana, was the keynote and motivational speaker.

MOOIVAAL MEDIA LAUNCHES JOB PORTAL OFFERING

Mooivaal Media has proudly launched its very own job portal aimed at job seekers in the Vaal triangle area and beyond. Mooivaal Media Jobs is the culmination of a partnership with Gauteng based company, Virtual Human Capital (VHC), the developers of a revolutionary employment portal and the VHC Partner Network, allowing job seekers and employers to interact.

Our portal allows job seekers to create an online CV profile, which uses structured information, making it possible for job seekers to be accurately matched to vacancies that are available. Advanced algorithms determine the extent to which a job seeker matches an opportunity, saving time for the job seeker, and making the tedious task of short listing more efficient and streamlined for employers. This means that job seekers will be more accurately considered for positions that suit them.

Mooivaal Media Jobs invites all job seekers to register on the portal, which can be found athttp://www.mvmwerk.co.za. Many employers will be looking for new recruits at this time of year in early 2012, so don’t delay, find your dream job today with Mooivaal Media Jobs.

Mooivaal Media Jobs is the first VHC partner to launch in the Vaal triangle area, and is a proud member of the VHC Partner Network, which in the near future will have a footprint spanning across South Africa. Furthermore, for employers, Mooivaal Media Jobs are offering an unbelievable pricing model that cannot be competed with.

What we are doing?

Mooivaal Media Jobs  has committed to help people in the Vaal triangle find more jobs and in so doing, enable employers and recruiters to find these job seekers in a cost effect manner. Mooivaal Media Jobs  is a member of the VHC Partner network, and we form part of a national footprint of partners that include print partners and commercial and community radio stations across the country. By harnessing the power of our collective reach, we are able to give job seekers better exposure to jobs around the country and to ensure that employers can find new people anywhere in South Africa at a fraction of the cost traditionally charged for access to online portals.

How does it work?

All you have to do is create your profile and CV on the Mooivaal Media Jobs  portal, and then the unique algorithm matches jobs to you. What this means is that the jobs actually come and find you, so each time you login, you will see a list of possible vacancies that you may be suitable for based on the information that you captured on your online CV.

Remember, that as long as the algorithm has information about you, it will be matching you to jobs all across the country, so that other partners who have job listings that match will also be displayed to you. This is where the power of a media partner network starts benefitting you as a job seeker.

For employers and recruiters, the collective network also ensures that they get in touch with the country’s top talent, regardless of where they are situated, expanding the pool of new recruits that can add value to the vacancy available. This becomes an extremely cost effective way to find new talent. We have a number of options, ranging from low cost monthly subscriptions (allowing unlimited access) to more customised solutions that allow the employer or recruiter to control their online recruitment cost.

Furthermore, for the nominal costs associated above, employers and recruiters have access to the entire national network of candidates and also, job postings are delivered to all matching candidates…Nationally!

Benefits for job seekers?

You can control your own privacy settings
You can ghost your CV when you are employed, so that you don’t have to deal with annoying calls once you are happy in a particular place of work. This simply means that you won’t be searchable by anyone, until you are ready to make your CV visible again.

When you are looking for a job again you don’t have to re-create your whole CV, you just have to update the relevant details and make it visible and searchable again.

You will have targeted exposure to job opportunities all over South Africa, and soon the rest of Africa.
The system does the matching for you, so you don’t even have to search. Just like Google seems to have that uncanny way of knowing what you want, so does Mooivaal Media Jobs!
Soon you will be able to choose whether you would like to receive email notifications if there are new jobs matching you.

Benefit for companies?

This is the most cost effective online recruitment solution that is currently available in South Africa. You have access and job advert exposure to job seekers all over SA, even in parts that previously had no knowledge of online job portals.

By using advanced technology akin to artificial intelligence, the system sorts and filters for you. Meaning that at the click of a button you can see which job seekers actually meet your requirements. Gone are the days of having to sift and screen through enormous amounts of CV’s, only to find that maybe 3% of them are worth interviewing.

Why Mooivaal Media Jobs?

We have a very unique connection with our community and we have become a trusted source of information that people actually want to see and read about. Now, we are extending that same service to help the Vaal triangle area and South Africa get more people employed. By partnering with VHC and consequently various other media partners in South Africa, we can now also engage with job seekers and employers far beyond the boundaries of our initial reach. We’ve always delivered value, and now we’re bringing you jobs and employees too!
