Nuwe Chevvie Sonic indrukwekkend

With Eish…And Juice

Sedibeng District Municipality Mayor Simon Mofokeng.
On Saturday night at the Sharpeville Hall, a man serving drinks to guests at a VIP table accidentally spilled glasses of juice onto Sedibeng Mayor Simon Mofokeng’s jacket. It appears that the waiter lost his footing as he made his way past the table.

At the time, Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, Emfuleni Acting Mayor Sello Pitso and the Public Protector Thulisile Madonsela were seated next to Mofokeng, who had to be rushed to his Vanderbijlpark home to change.
Upon his return, Mofokeng made an announcement that the waiter should not worry. “Problems occur when the situation is conducive for them to be solved,” says Mofokeng, who assured guests and the waiter that he understands that the spillage was an accident.

Mr. Lerato Serero, ‘n jare lange ervare koerantman, is Sedibeng Ster se nuusredakteur.

Terapie honde versprei glimlagte

PARYS.

Talent of children help other children in need

VANDERBIJLPARK. – 1 300 entries were received and 110 young artists recognised in the Rotary D9400 Clubs: Riverside and Vanderbijlpark’s third annual Children 4 Children Art Competition.

The judging was conducted by independent university art lecturers and well known local artists.
Due to their enthusiastic encouragement recognition was given to a larger number of participants in each of the different categories than had originally been intended.

Apart from floating trophies and certificates, winners also received breathtaking cash prizes from Bidvest Bank, vouchers for spending at Stonehaven on Vaal, a Damelin tertiary certificate course, art classes from Kenosis Art School, Rotary’s Usborne Illustrated Dictionaries, books from the Rotary Humanitarian Centre, toys, stationery, party packs, glo-sticks and much more.

More than 400 people attended the prize-giving in support of the 1 300 young Vaal Triangle artists who entered.
The event took place recently at Stonehaven on Vaal in Vanderbijlpark. Amongst the dignitaries were Professor Pierre Lucouw, the Vaal Triangle Patron of Art and current President of the RC Vanderbijlpark, with his wife Susan, Rotary D9400 District Governor Anton Meerkotter from Middelburg, D9300 Past District Governor Trevor Nienaber with his wife PDGA Zurika, Assistant Governor Michael Fraser, current Presidents, Presidents Elect Hannes Malan with his wife Helene and Angela Andrasyan-Van Pletzen with husband PP Johan, Past Presidents, valued sponsors and donors of trophies and prizes, school principals and teachers, choirs of Pinedene and Kollege Park Primary Schools with their choir masters and soloists, singer Jean-Michael du Plessis, proud parents and the artists themselves, from pre-schoolers to adults. Bidvest Bank was represented by Mr Duncan Nkosi from Johannesburg.

The purpose of the initiative – originally the brainchild of Rotarian and “Paul Harris” Fellow Rosemary Anderson – is to promote the practice of art, to create awareness of the necessity for financial support for children during their years of education and to raise funds for the benefit of needy grade R learners at Pinedene Primary’s facility.
The motivation behind the project is to provide and run a project in which children’s talents and participation can be utilised to benefit children who are in need.
Professor Lucouw appealed to the children, to continue with their art.

“Teachers and parents support and encourage children to practice art, and Rotary, promoting art continues,” he said.
Stonehaven on Vaal staff provided and prepared the beautiful venue on the banks of the Vaal River and also sponsored a cruise for Kollege Park Primary School staff in recognition of their record number of 713 entries. Flowers for the venue were donated by Fresh Cut Flowers.
The works of art and calendars (with pictures of the winning art works) can be purchased from Elsa Venter on 082 858 1271 during December on Sunday (Christmas Markets at Stonehaven) and in January 2012 from Angela Andrasyan-van Pletzen at Pinedene Primary School.

All funds raised are for the benefit of the Children 4 Children Project, a combined project of the Rotary Clubs of Riverside and Vanderbijlpark, especially to assist needy Grade R learners.

* Enquiries about the activities of these two Rotary Clubs can be directed to PP Johan van Pletzen 082 855 9171 for RC Riverside and PN Celeste Lance on 083 453 2178 for RC Vanderbijlpark. The C4C Project is run by a combined committee under the chairmanship of PE Angela Andrasyan-Van Pletzen at pinedene@cybersmart.co.za.

Youth development the new currency

MEYERTON. – No less than 47 students received certificates at the first graduation ceremony of the Midvaal Youth Leadership Programme held in December last year in the Meyerton Town Hall.

The Midvaal Local Municipality together with the the Oliphant Institute of Leadership and the North West University embarked on the Midvaal Youth Leadership Programme earlier this year.

“The unemployment rate in South Africa is reported at 25-percent and of the 25, 60-percent are made up of young people. The leadership programme was launched in response to the challenge of youth unemployment in our country. The three alliance partnership seeks to create opportunities for establishing future leaders and entrepreneurs who will make a valuable contribution to their society,” said Reverend John Maluma of the Northwest University.
The main speaker of the day was well known TV personality Dr Victor Ramathesele. He is a product of the Vaal and grew to become a success from a very poor background. He said that students should only see this as the beginning.
“Use the certificate in your hand well. It is only an enabler. You are the master of your own future. The only way to success is knowing your own purpose and growing towards your full potential,” said Ramathesele.

No less than 200 candidates were interviewed from among applications submitted after the youth leadership media launch in March this year. All young Midvaal people who had completed Grade 12 or its equivalent qualification in the last three years, were called upon to be part of this life-changing programme. A total of 80 candidates made the final cut to be the first intake of the programme.

“The South African Economy simply does not create enough opportunities for our youth.
For 400 000 learners matriculating, there are only 150 000 jobs available from people retiring per year. The time has come for young people to take responsibility for their own lives. The only way to initiate change is for them to create economic opportunities for themselves. This is one of the programme’s main objectives,” said Midvaal executive mayor Councillor Timothy Nast.

The training during the programme focused on Life Skills, starting your own business, computer skills, leadership, supporting communities with HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment as well as community leadership. The leadership programme will run for a period of 12 months for the next three years at the North West University’s Vaal Campus. The university has endorsed the programme and issued certificates to students who completed the programme. Funding for the training was provided by the Midvaal Local Municipality and various sponsors.
