SASOLBURG.

VUT commemorates world AIDS day

VANDERBIJLPARK. – Staff and students of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) commemorated World AIDS Day on November 23 on their main campus in Vanderbijlpark. Although World Aids Day is celebrated globally on December 1, academic activities are completed for the year, thus the celebration on November 23. The purpose of the campaign was to reinforce the message of reduction of the number of HIV infections, and to reduce the number of gender-based violent attacks. Karabo Moloi (group leader of PR Medix) said the aim of the World Aids Day celebrations at VUT was to break the stereotype about HIV/AIDS. “PR Medix has made it a mission to provide students with a vital preventative message before they go on their annual break,” Karabo said.

Students were also asked to behave responsibly during the festive season. World Aids Day was also celebrated with entertainment by Soul Renovators, Doreen and the SCO Church Choir. Goody Bags and other “freebies” were handed out to students, of which one of the favourites amongst students were the Levi-branded condoms. PR Medix is a group of students who assist the VUT Clinic on campus. During 2011 they were involved with the Phuza Wise Project, with Soul City, Condom Week @ VUT, promoting the donation of blood and World Aids Day. The group is available to visit schools in the Vaal Triangle, where they spread health messages through music, drama, poetry and other entertainment. * For more information on World Aids Day, visit http://www.worldaidscampaign.org.
