Vir meer inligting kontak Lydia Winchester by (011) 475-2187.

ArcelorMittal S.Africa Shuts Mill as Kumba Talks Fail

July 16 (Bloomberg) — ArcelorMittal South Africa Ltd., a unit of the world’s largest steelmaker, said it will close its Saldanha plant and cut all steel exports after failing to reach an interim iron ore supply agreement with Kumba Iron Ore Ltd.

The plans will affect as many as 4,000 temporary and permanent jobs at the steelmaker and “seriously impact” industries that depend on its output, the company said in a statement today. The ArcelorMittal unit employs 10,000 workers.

Saldanha is situated in one of South Africa’s poorest areas, on barren land north of Cape Town, and was opened in 1998 by formerly state-owned Iscor Ltd. and the Industrial Development Corp., the government development agency. Iscor’s steel business, which was renamed ArcelorMittal South Africa, took ownership of the plant after Iscor was split into separate steel and mining companies.

A pact agreed as part of the split entitled ArcelorMittal South Africa to buy iron ore, a steelmaking ingredient, from the mining group’s Sishen mine at 3 percent above production costs. A dispute erupted in February after Kumba, which now controls Sishen, canceled the nine-year-old supply pact. The dispute is now in arbitration.

The whole of the Saldanha area “will be negatively affected,” said Abri Du Plessis, chief investment officer of Gryphon Asset Management, by phone from Cape Town today.

ArcelorMittal South Africa, which gets two-thirds of its ore needs from Kumba, supplies South Africa with about 70 percent of steel requirements.

‘Assessing All Options’

The country’s Department of Trade and Industry said it’s “assessing all options” to ensure the economy isn’t damaged by the dispute and offered to mediate between the parties.

By threatening to close Saldanha, ArcelorMittal South Africa is trying to “soften” the government’s stance toward it, Gryphon’s Du Plessis said. The government “has spent a lot on rail and electricity” in the Saldanha area, he said.

It’s very silly to use “workers as pawns in a commercial dispute,” said Frans Baleni, general secretary of South Africa’s biggest labor group, the National Union of Mineworkers, in a text message. “4,000 jobs plus dependants cannot be made to pay such a huge price.”

South Africa’s unemployment rate rose for a fourth consecutive quarter in the first three months of this year as companies shed jobs while waiting for signs that the recovery in Africa’s largest economy is sustainable.

Prepay for Ore

Earlier, Kumba said that from Aug. 1 it will only deliver ore to ArcelorMittal South Africa if it gets paid for the shipments 48 hours in advance at the rates proposed, and if back payments for ore delivered from March 1 are made.

That came after ArcelorMittal rejected two options put forward by Kumba, either that the steelmaker pay the difference between the original pact and the market price into an escrow account until the dispute is resolved, or that it pays $50 a metric ton for ore supplied to Saldanha on the coast and $80 a ton for Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal and Vanderbijlpark near Johannesburg.

“It’s not possible for ArcelorMittal to agree to the prices being demanded,” it said in today’s statement. The prices being asked “would threaten the viability” of the steelmaker’s business.

ArcelorMittal South Africa, 46.8 percent-owned by Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal, produced 8 million metric tons of steel in 2009. Saldanha can produce 1.2 million tons a year according to the company’s website.

Shares in ArcelorMittal South Africa extended losses after the announcement, falling 4.4 percent to 72.04 rand at 4:07 p.m. in Johannesburg. The stock has declined 37 percent since February 26, when Kumba announced that it was ending the supply agreement. Kumba lost 2.48 rand, or 0.8 percent, to 333.02 rand.

Tomatoes for a longer life!

For years doctors, health books and dieticians have told us about the benefits of following a Mediterranean diet.
But what exactly is so great about this diet? The Mediterranean diet, also known as the wonder diet, is filled with tomatoes and tomato pastes, which contains a vitamin called Lycopene.

Lycopene is packed with health benefits such as the ability to fight against some cancers, prevent heart attacks and fight sun damage to the skin.
In a recent study published in the Journal of National Cancer Institute showed that men consuming high levels of tomato and tomato products such as pasta sauce reduced their risk of prostate cancer by 35%.
And this is not the only cancer Lycopene can prevent. It also reduces the risk of lung and stomach cancer and protect against cancers of the breast, cervix, mouth, pancreas, colon, rectum and oesophagus.
The amount of antioxidants in Lycopene can also eliminate the possibility of heart attacks. Animal studies show that when cholesterol becomes ΓÇÿoxidisedΓÇÖ (damaged) by free radical molecules it is likely to clog arteries and increase the risk of heart disease. Lycopene has been shown to protect cholesterol from oxidation, and is therefore very likely to prevent heart attacks in the long run.
But studies also found that if you want these benefits you will have to eat tomatoes mixed or served with oil, because lycopene is ΓÇÿlipid solubleΓÇÖ, meaning it dissolves easier in oil than it does in water.
Thus, eating a lot of fresh tomatoes or drinking tomato juice wonΓÇÖt give you the benefits you want, but tomato pasta and sauce, which is already mixed with oil, will. For a very cheap and easy way to reap the rewards you want, you can eat baked beans in tomato sauce.

Rudeness at work causes mistakes

If someone is rude to you at work or if you witness rudeness you are more likely to make mistakes.
According to Professor Rhona Flin, a psychologist from Scotland, the link between rudeness and mistakes is particularly concerning in healthcare settings, where it can pose a threat to patient safety and quality of care.

Research found that in confined areas, such as operating theatres, even watching rudeness that occurs between colleagues might impair team members’ thinking skills and general performance.
Rudeness at work is not uncommon, she says in the recent British Medical Journal. In a survey of 391 operating theatre staffmembers, 66% of respondents said they had “received aggressive behaviour” from nurses and 53% from surgeons during the previous six months. Disagreements between surgeons and theatre nurses were reported by 63% of the respondents, and disagreements between theatre nurses and ward nurses were reported by 58%. The main source of the problem was the management of the operating list. Interviews nurses also indicated that they sometimes had to tolerate surgeons’ bad temper and tantrums.
Flin concludes that people concerned with patient safety should note that civility between workers may have more benefits than just a harmonious atmosphere.

Hoekom verwerpte vroue troos soek by kos en drank

SE7 house seller irate over neighbour

VANDERBIJLPARK. – An SE7 resident on June 24 complained about a neighbour who has not had refuse removed for weeks.
The water in the neighbour’s swimming pool, she says, is a brackish, black colour because it has never been cleaned.
The surrounding area is being used as a dump and – in the past – a variety of unsuitable plastic bags was used too put out rubbish.

The complainant says the neighbour also left a tap running for three weeks and used the “swimming pool” to dump all kinds of rubbish.
The rubbish, aside from blowing on to her premises, has attracted colonies of rats and cockroaches which have invaded her home next door.
She is the mother of two children aged six and three and does not let them play outside unsupervised due to what she considers a health hazard.
She estimates that from 10 to 15 students have been living there, though the premises now seem to be vacant. A primary concern of the resident is that she is trying to sell her home and that potential buyers looking over the house once U-turned out after  seeing the mess next door and hearing the pulsing racket of music emanating from it. The double-storey house has been vacant for some time.
Ward 4 councillor Milu Malhou says the resident’s complaint reflects problems that have been common to the area since its “transformation” into a student area over the years.
Cllr Malhou (DA) points out, however, that the area has improved markedly ever since an exposΓÇÜ engineered by herself was aired on TV’s “Special Assignment”. The offending house itself appeared on the programme, showing police at about 2:00 as they jumped a fence, cut padlocks and made at least one arrest.
Malhou also reminds people that a court case against illegal landlords was recently won in Vereeniging, legal fees paid by residents.
She reports that visits to the area by the health inspector have declined.
In the past, she repeatedly had the police go to the double-storey in response to noise complaints from the resident. She went to the house personally several times, once even on a Sunday. She said the health inspector was looking into the complaints.

Tans lyk hierdie area totaal verwaarloos.

Oogoperasie gee seun beter gehalte lewe

SASOLBURG.

Flooded in junk mail

VEREENIGING. – A simple data capturing error has resulted in a local man receiving thousands of letters in the mail, none of which were addressed to him. Since October 2009, Mr Koos Rall (75), a pensioner, has received up to 60 letters from Liberty Life on a weekly basis.

ΓÇ£Why do they send these letters to us?ΓÇ¥ asked Rall, who is not a client of Liberty Life. ΓÇ£When I go to pick up the newspaper in the morning it lies on the ground because my post-box is filled with these letters.ΓÇ¥ According to Rall, the letters are addressed to different people, but they all have his address.
He alleged that the call centre operators did little to help him when he tried to bring this matter to their attention. He claimed he has spent over R200 on phone calls to Liberty Life. ΓÇ£I have now given up and just take the letters to the post office in Arconpark.
ΓÇ£All the letters are for people who are behind on their payments. It looks like a scam to me,ΓÇ¥ added Rall.
ΓÇ£This is certainly not a scam of any sort,ΓÇ¥ said Lindi Dlamini from Liberty LifeΓÇÖs Group Executive Retail Operations. ΓÇ£We have found that there was a data capturing error on one policy in October 2009 where an incorrect address for the bank was captured. This led the letters to be sent to the incorrect address.ΓÇ¥
Dlamini explained that the letters were not addressed to different people, but to a bank, which holds cession on client policies.
When asked whether incidents of this nature may make Liberty LifeΓÇÖs clients susceptible to fraud, Dlamini said: ΓÇ£Although the letters contain minimal client data, and as such pose negligible risk of fraud, we take any potential breach of client confidentiality very seriously. All our controls are being re-tested and new checks implemented to ensure that is does not reoccur.ΓÇ¥
She mentioned that they will investigate RallΓÇÖs claims regarding the companyΓÇÖs call centre.
“We apologise for the inconvenience experienced by the family and assure that the error has now been corrected and no further correspondence will be generated to this address.”

Farewells for Team

VANDERBIJLPARK. – With the first stage of the FIFA Soccer World Cup at an end, many supporters are saddened to see their favourite teams leave. One such team that will be missed in Vanderbijlpark is the Swiss. When asked how it felt to have the team residing with them, Andr├⌐ Joubert, General Manager of Hotel and Accommodation at Emerald Resort and Casino, said: “It was a great experience.”

The Swiss team stayed at the Emerald Resort and Casino in Vanderbijlpark for the first stage of the Soccer World Cup, but left for Switzerland after they failed to qualify for the quarter final round. With the departure of the Swiss, it will be possible for the public to reserve accommodation from the start of July.
“They are a very organized and disciplined team,” said Mr Joubert. The Swiss team had open training sessions where the public had a chance to ΓÇ£meet and greetΓÇ¥ with them.
However, due to the teamΓÇÖs busy schedules, they were unable to fully experience everything that Emerald had to offer, such as their game drives and casino.
During their stay, the team was greeted with special celebrations when they returned from a match and the Swiss flag was seen flying all around the Resort.
Some of the casinoΓÇÖs personnel attended the Switzerland and Honduras final group match, hoping that the Swiss would make it through to the next round.
Switzerland needed to score two goals against Honduras at the Free State Stadium on June 25 to progress to the next round. However, the match remained goalless on both sides and SwitzerlandΓÇÖs World Cup journey came to an end. Of the teams in group H, Spain and Chile made it through to the quarter finals.
Emerald Casino held a farewell dinner for the Swiss team before they departed.
The General Manager of the Riverside Hotel in Vanderbijlpark was not available for comment on the state of the C├┤te d’Ivoire team by the time of going to press. However, their World Cup ambitions also came to a halt after they failed to progress to the quarter finals.┬á
