Child Friendly rooms at court

VANDERBIJLPARK. – Two rooms at the Vanderbijlpark MagistrateΓÇÖs court were recently transformed into child friendly waiting rooms by Tjokkerland Schools. Responding to the lack of waiting rooms for child witnesses, Mrs Mariaan Schutte, the CEO of Tjokkerland Schools, and her helpers created these rooms for children who have to testify in court.

The rooms were painted in cheerful colours and decorated with friendly cartoon characters. The rooms also have a TV, furniture, carpets and educational toys.
Children are now able to wait and play in a child friendly and relaxed atmosphere in a secure place, until they are needed to testify in court. The gardens were also cleaned and the security doors fixed by Vesco Community Enterprises (VCE).
During the opening of the new facility, Mrs Schutte stressed that children should always be protected against crime as far as possible. She also said that the community should all stand together to assist our region’s children as far as possible.
Chief VaalRand Prosecutor Johan Venter thanked Tjokkerland for the goods that they have loaned to the court on a long-term basis.
He also thanked the CEO of VCE, Phillip Nothnagel, who is always willing to assist the community and for the important role played by the company in the fight against crime. Venter also thanked Rita Beneke from the local Spur who kindly sponsored a tasty meal for all the people who attended the handover.

Kommer oor toenemende veldbrande

VEREENIGING.

Volgens me.

Wastewater treatment plants lack quality

The Green Drop report released in April paints a bleak picture of wastewater treatment plants in the Sedibeng District Municipality, with one of the local municipalities only scoring 15%. The report, which was commissioned in 2008, sought to determine the quality of wastewater treatment plants in South Africa.

In the Sedibeng district, Lesedi Local Municipality received the highest Green Drop score, which was 55%. Midvaal Local Municipality only scored 15%, while Emfuleni Local Municipality got a zero Green Drop score because it failed to participate.
Lesedi Municipal Manager for Water, Sanitation and Waste, Star Moholobela, said that his municipality scored 55% because “our sewer network is well maintained by qualified personnel and our treatment plants are operated by qualified personnel from East Rand Water Care Company (ERWAT).”
Midvaal Municipality spokesperson Mary Sanderson said: “This score does not actually represent the existing effluent quality. The effluent compliance percentage for the plant was recently measured at 87%.”
Sanderson explained that the report was compiled in April 2009 and since then Midvaal has taken various steps to improve their treatment plants.
According to Stanley Gaba, Emfuleni Municipal spokesperson, Emfuleni is acting in close collaboration with Water Affairs. “Although we have not been assessed yet, we are working closely with Water Affairs to ensure that we will be ready, come the time of assessment.”
The report would suggest that treatment plants in cities fare better than their rural counterparts because the latter suffer from aging infrastructure, lack of funding and skills shortages.
Sanderson from Midvaal agreed with this view. She admitted that the treatment plant in Meyerton is running at full capacity and needs to be expanded.
“Skilled staff is a matter of concern. This is one of the main reasons why Midvaal is utilising private service providers,” added Sanderson.
While “funding always remains a matter of concern” R5 million was made available by Water Affairs for upgrading and R80 million has been earmarked as a grant for the Meyerton plant.
Moholobela said that lack of funding for infrastructure is not an issue in Lesedi. Also, the Department of Water Affairs has launched a training programme for treatment plant operators, which should address the skills shortage.
Gaba admitted that pump station 8 in Emfuleni suffers from overloading and “old age” but it will be replaced “to alleviate the existing spillages from the old infrastructure”.
Process controllers at Emfuleni’s treatment plants are participating in a training and skills development programme run by Rand Water and the Department of Water Affairs, said Gaba.
According to the Green Drop report, wastewater treatment performance was generally poor in South Africa and was considered to be “far from acceptable”.
Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs Buyelwa Sonjica expressed concern by the Green Drop report’s findings. “We are committed to doing all within our power to ensure a turnaround in the general state of the wastewater treatment plants in our country,” she said.

Volgens mev.

Vaal kry eerste “tuisgemaakte” flaminkie

VANDERBIJLPARK.

Two new community projects announced

MEYERTON. – Heineken International last week announced two new community projects in South Africa – the launch of a mobile health care clinic to help improve access to basic health care in the Midvaal area and support for a new business training initiative for existing and former athletes.
Our involvement in these projects will provide much needed support and assistance to the local community in which we operate here in South Africa, said Tom de Man, Regional President Heineken Africa & Middle East.

Since we started brewing at the Sedibeng Brewery in September 2009 we have been able to drive economic value to the local community. Now through both these initiatives we can deliver significant social benefits as well.
We have welcomed the construction of the Sedibeng Brewery and the contribution it is making to the economic growth of our country, said Timothy Nast, Mayor of Midvaal. Importantly, our community is also benefiting from positive activities such as the mobile medical clinic and the education programme. We embrace these initiatives as they are helping to strengthen our community today and for the future.” he said.
The initiatives of Heineken and the Heineken Africa Foundation support the company?s long term sustainability ambition, Brewing a Better Future, which was launched in April and is characterised by setting clear targets for all aspects of its operations and delivering positive social impacts across the business.
Mobile Health Care Clinic:
The Heineken Africa Foundation has joined forces with the Midvaal Local Municipality to provide a mobile health clinic ensuring basic health care is widely available in the Midvaal Municipal area.
The Sedibeng Brewery is responsible for the maintenance of the mobile clinic to ensure it provides a reliable service.
The mobile clinic aims to reach vulnerable groups and patients who have difficulty getting to and from established clinics. Most of these people live in informal settlements in a distance of over 15 kilometres from an established clinic.
The vehicle is equipped to dispense general health services including prenatal care, family planning, well-child services, youth care, chronic diseases treatment, acute primary care, as well as HIV Counselling and Testing and the distribution of anti-retroviral medication. It is expected to benefit approximately 1,250 patients a month.

- Business Training Workshop for Athletes
Heineken has sponsored a two-day business workshop (20, 21 May) for 100 candidates, designed by the Johan Cruyff Institute for Sport Studies and facilitated by the South Africa Football Players Union (SAFPU) and the University of Johannesburg.
As a sponsor of big global sporting events like the UEFA Champions League and the Rugby World Cup, Heineken feels a commitment to bring positive change for South African athletes and to help improve their job prospects.
The training helps athletes develop leadership skills and indentify business opportunities, in order to be able to build a productive future through education and serve the best interests of sport and society. Athletes in South Africa currently have limited options to make a transition from sports to an economically viable career.

Midvaal is the place to live

Municipality comes out tops in quality-of-life survey

Midvaal, a tiny municipality south of Johannesburg with 100,000 residents, has come out tops in a Gauteng survey measuring quality of life – but the area is also home to those worst affected by poverty.

quote But the area is also home to the poorest of the poor quote

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane yesterday announced that Midvaal, the recent recipient of two substantial investments, came out more favourably than other municipalities in the Gauteng City Region Observatory report.

Midvaal covers areas such as Meyerton, Henley-on-Klip, Walkerville and De Deur, and is the best of the surveyed municipalities for overall quality of life.

Midvaal mayor Timothy Nast said at a press conference that “good governance” and “investor confidence” were the main reasons his council had the lowest unemployment rate in the province, 26%.

Municipalities with high unemployment rates include Emfuleni, south of Johannesburg (59%), Johannesburg (41%) and Tshwane (40%).

“With the Heineken brewery plant and Ferrero-Rocher investing in our area, many jobs were created,” said Nast.

He conceded that Midvaal was hit by a service-delivery protest three months ago, when residents marched to the council offices because they did not want to pay for municipal services.

He said the issue had been resolved and that most residents, most of them working class, could afford to pay their rates.

“Midvaal has the lowest incidence of absolute destitution: only 3% of households lacked money to feed children in the 12 months preceding the survey,” he said.

Though Gauteng residents are generally satisfied with their quality of life, service delivery and poverty were regarded as pressing concerns. About 40% of Gauteng residents say they are “poor”.

The survey found that, of the more than 6000 residents interviewed, about 46% viewed crime as a serious problem.

About 14% were unemployed, and 7% were infected with HIV/Aids.

The survey also found that 21% of the respondents had been victims of crime in the past 12 months.

“We have, on many platforms, already admitted that crime cheats our communities of a better quality of life.

“That is why we have given the Gauteng aggravated robbery strategy and other anti-crime programmes our utmost support,” Mokonyane said.

Among those interviewed, about 1.5% lacked sanitation – below the level of a chemical toilet – and the worst affected (5.1%) live in the Midvaal Municipality.
